Professor Iyayi’s last fight

Renowned academic, writer, activist, and social commentator, Professor Festus Iyayi, yesterday died under circumstances that call for a sober reflection on the conduct of Nigerian public officials and the threat they pose to road users.

Iyayi died after a vehicle on the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada, rammed into the bus conveying him and other colleagues to a union meeting in Kano.

Although the details of this tragedy are still sketchy, we hasten to comment on the recklessness of drivers on Governor Wada's convoy. Just about a year ago, the same governor's convoy was involved in an accident that left him hospitalised.

It cannot be a coincidence that Mr Wada has been in office for just about two years and has been involved in as many fatal accidents. Something is wrong. And it is time Nigerians asked Mr Wada and his staff at Government House Lokoja what it is.

Are Governor Wada's drivers the ones with the most ill-luck or are they simply power-drunk and reckless on the roads?

In Nigeria, there is a general lack of discipline among drivers of high-ranking public officials, especially those on convoys with siren-blaring police escort cars. Governor Wada's drivers seem to be competing for top place among this group of reckless drivers.

This trend must be checked immediately. But who can check it when those responsible for enforcing law and order are the worst culprits?

It is a sad commentary on the impunity of these public officials and their drivers that no one has been charged or convicted for traffic offences and in some cases, manslaughter.

We are not convinced that the police carry out the necessary investigation and prosecution when a vehicle on a public official's convoy is involved in an accident. We challenge the police to prove us wrong with facts about who has ever been prosecuted in such circumstances.

In the case of Iyayi's death, we believe the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which he vibrantly served as a former national president, should use its influence to demand justice. We call for a thorough investigation of the accident. We call for justice.

For the Iyayi family, we pray that God will give them the fortitude to bear the loss. We assure them of our commitment to seeing that justice is served if wrongdoing is established.
