AMMC Demolishes Recreation spots In Abuja.

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Department of Development Control, on Sunday demolished two recreation spots, FESCO Security Gardens and Deos Gardens in Imo Crescent Area 1, Garki, Abuja.

Both spots also accommodated Churches at the time of the demolition.

Deos Gardens accommodated the Redeemed Christian Church of God's Sunday service, while FESCO Gardens accommodated the Illumination Gospel Assembly.

Coordinator of AMMC, Mr  Rueban Okoya, said that the spots were removed because they engaged in illegal activities, adding that even the Churches were illegal.

"A lot of illegal activities go on here; they converted a green area into a Church, a recreational garden and a residential area all in one; this is unacceptable.

"These Churches are not legal churches because they organise their services in an illegal environment,' he said.

Okoya said that it was not abnormal for the Department of Development Control to carry out demolition of structures on Sunday because it worked round the clock.

"Development Control works 24 hours and the fact that some people are holding church service on Sunday should not prevent us from doing our work.

"Human beings, if not checked, will constitute themselves into nuisance in the society; if we allow this kind of development in the FCT, the city will become rough and inhabitable,'' he said.

He said that AMMC was increasing its monitoring activities to ensure that such illegal structures, when demolished, were not rebuilt by the owners.

Mr Innocent Esiagu, an official of the Parks and Recreation Department of AMMC said that the demolished gardens were illegal because they did not have approved plans.

"They are not befitting to the FCT and they constitute security risk to inhabitants.

"Although the lands used are legal because they are green areas reserved for recreation, the structures are illegal because they lack the necessary approval by the department.

"They need to come to our office to obtain approval before they can construct parks; this is to ensure that recommended building plan is adhered to,'' he said.

Mr William Ikpi, a deacon of one of the Churches, whose service was disrupted by the exercise, complained that the faithful were not notified of the demolition plan.

"We came here to worship this morning only for bulldozers to appear and start destroying our things.

"The management of this garden should have notified us of the receipt of the demolition  notice;  we don't know where to go from here,'' he said.
