LAWYERS FLAY FG’S SACK THREAT TO LECTURERS.

The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and the Public Interest Lawyers' League (PILL) have criticized the federal government for threatening to sack all university lecturers if they failed to call of their strike.

The Supervising Minister of Education Nyesom Wike recently gave a December 4 ultimatum for the striking lecturers to resume academic activities or face mass sack.

In separate statements yesterday, the chairman of the NBA Abuja branch Desmond Umar Yamah and the PILL President Abdul Mahmud observed that the lecturers have the right to embark on strike, and described the minister's threat as 'empty' and 'insensitive'.

They reminded the federal government that the use of threats of mass sack did not work during the military era in resolving industrial disputes.

"Nyesom Wike forgets this bit of history. But, we must remind him of the then Minister of Education, Professor Babs Fafunwa, who threatened sack of striking university lecturers. To issue threat of sack to universities lecturers with rich historical tradition of struggles is pitiful; and to tread the same path his predecessors trod shows a poor understanding of labour relations," PILL said.

While explaining that it would be costly to replace over hundred lecturers in the Nigerian universities, Yamah appealed to ASUU to reconsider their position "in the interest of students and the nation."
