JONATHAN PLEDGES BETTER SUPPORT TO OPEN VARSITY

President Goodluck Jonathan has said the Federal Government will work with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to solve the problem of access to university education.

He said this while declaring open the 7th Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning holding from 2nd - 6th December 2013 in Abuja.



The president was represented by the supervising minister of Education Nyesom Wike.

 "We have challenges in our conventional universities...with the National Open University of Nigeria; we have found solution to the issue of access to university education. We will continue to be a strong supporter," he said.

The president also said: "it obvious that open learning education without walls is the way to go. Distance learning is an innovation in the system of education in this part of the world."

He also revealed the government would assist the NOUN in achieving its objectives.
 "I am aware of the challenges and needs of NOUN. The government is working out modalities for collaboration of different agencies of government with the national open university of Nigeria to re strategise about a way forward."

 He said government is trying to empower NOUN with information communications technology saying "This special program is in collaboration with Sure-P and the Central Bank of Nigeria."

Earlier in his welcome address, Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe, Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), said an open and distance learning is peoples' education, bringing education to the grassroots without the restriction of wall.
