The General manager, Health Safety and Environment of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Engr Olisa Okoli has disclosed that
disused transformer oil is now being sold in many Nigerian markets to unsuspecting buyers as cooking oil.
Speaking during a training workshop for media personnel in Abuja, Engr Okoli lamented that
transformer oil finds it's way into Nigerian markets, where its repackaged and sold as cooking oil to Nigerians.
He said that the transformer oil, which contains a dangerous substance; called polychlorinated
biphenyl (PCBs) is capable of causing various health challenges, including cancer and various skin diseases.
He advised the public to be wary of the type of cooking oil they buy from the markets, while calling on the government to take necessary
action so as to safeguard the health of Nigerians.
