Jonathan had on Monday signed the bill prohibiting gay marriage or same-sex partnership in Nigeria.
Bishop Gabriel Omoruyi, a former spokesman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, Lagos Chapter, said Jonathan's action was the best thing that could have happened.
"This is one of the best bills signed into law by President Jonathan.
"Any individual or nation that desires peace, good health and the favour of God must avoid those things that are contrary to nature and our good culture," Omoruyi told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
Mrs Mma Odi, the Executive Director of BAOBAB for Women's Human Rights, an NGO, said that God led the president in the right direction in signing the bill into law.
"I praise God for this great statement that the president has made; God will continue to lead him to give us good governance.
"This gay thing is not in our character, values, culture or in our tradition, so this is one bad thing that we are not going to copy," she said.
Odi urged those who were supporting gay marriage to channel their energy to something more beneficial to all.
Mr Sam Onimisi, a former National Publicity Secretary of the Democratic People's Alliance (DPA), also lauded the president for signing the bill into law.
"This is a good development; as human beings, we are expected to conform to God's admonition in our religious and cultural norms.
"Let us all try to live the kind of life that God wants us to live and see the changes and great things that will come to our country.
"I pray gay supporters will have a rethink," Onimisi said.
Prof. Oluremi Sonaiya, the National Public Relations Officer of KOWA Party, said that homosexuality was unnatural and against the law of God.
