CAUSES OF INGROWN TOENAIL.

This is an irritating, nagging problem in the foot that manifests with a variety of severity, and also of presentations. It is something which many people treat with levity until it becomes severe enough to cause annoying constraints.

The common causes are as follows;

1 .       INCORRECTLY CUT TOENAIL:
These are poorly cut toe nails that are cut far too short such that it exposes some of the soft part of the underlying toe and the surrounding skin thus grows around the edge of the nail. The result is pain and swelling over a period of time.

2 .       WEARING TIGHT SHOE / SOCKS:
These items can press the skin against the edges of the nail thus resulting in an ingrown toe nail.

3 .       NAIL INFECTIONS:
 Sometimes, a toenail may become wider after suffering a fungal infection for example and this extra gain in weight will cause skin injury that produces the classic symptoms of ingrown toenail. On other occasions, the nail may become brittle with the pieces breaking off itand causing local skin injury.

4 .       NAIL INJURY:
If a toenail has been has been injured during play or an accident or while cutting it, a jagged edge can dig into the soft surrounding skin and cause the classic symptoms of an ingrown toenail.

5 .       POOR FOOT HYGIENE:
The skin around a toenail can become soft from poor hygiene such as not regularly washing and drying the feet or not regularly changing the socks. Sweating can also cause similar problem.

6 .       THE NATURAL SHAPE OF THE TOENAIL:
If someone has a toenail which appears fan-shaped, it is conceivable that the extra width of its base is likely to dig repeatedly into the surrounding skin with enough frequency to cause a local injury. This is a problem during, walking jogging, or climbing such that no upright position will be ideal for the person until he deals with the problem.
