A chieftain of the All Progressive Party in Lagos State, Chief Ayo Akande, on Monday said the new education policy of Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola would help improve the quality of education in the state.
A statement quoted Akande as saying this at Ogba, Lagos, while addressing members of the APC in the Ifako /Ijaiye Local Government area of Lagos.
He said education all over the world was dynamic and that the change of education policy in Osun would have been as a result of careful consideration of the fact that the past policy had failed to bring about the desired results.
The new education policy introduced by Aregbesola has been a subject of controversy with Christian groups kicking against some aspects of the policy, especially the merging of schools and absorbing hijab-wearing pupils in schools said to be founded by missionaries.
Akande however said the Osun governor deserved commendation for his courage to restructure education in a way that would bring out the best out of the school children.
He said, "It takes a lot of courage and concern for the future of the country for a governor to take the bold step to restructure the education system in his state with a view to bring out the best out of the school system. Governor Aregbesola should be commended for having this courage.
"He is apparently aware that the new policy would not go down with everybody but what matters is the improvements the new policy would bring to the system. Of course, human beings hardly accept changes easily; by the time the new policy starts yielding positive results, of which I am sure, Osun people would be grateful to the governor."
